Bhubaneswar, April 22 (NationPress) The Commissionerate Police successfully secured the safe return of a nine-year-old boy within six hours of his abduction from the Nirakarpur region of Odisha's Khurdha district, as per police reports.
Authorities apprehended seven individuals, including two women, who were implicated in the kidnapping.
The suspects have been named as Subhrakant Mohapatra (22), also known as Basuni, Somnath Das (21), Chinmaya Kumar Nayak (22), Sandip Routray (22), Sagar Nayak (21), Sujata Jena (19), and Nibedita Das (20).
Subhrakant, who is the primary conspirator, is a relative of the victim Pratyush's tutor and resides in the same village, Panchagaon, under the jurisdiction of the Airfield police station in Bhubaneswar.
“The police were alerted about the kidnapping at approximately 10:30 a.m. today. It was initially determined that the abduction was carried out for ransom. Given the sensitive nature of the case, we launched a rapid operation involving four teams,” stated Commissioner S. Dev Datta Singh.
Singh confirmed that the child was ultimately rescued unharmed from a rental property occupied by suspects Somnath Das and Chinmaya in Nirakarpur, Khurdha district.
The kidnappers, who had held the child captive, were also taken into custody by the police.
Subhrakant, the main perpetrator, has a close relationship with Pratyush's family.
He orchestrated the kidnapping, aware that the victim’s father, Arta Ranjan Kalia, had recently received a substantial amount of money from selling a piece of land, intending to extort ransom from him.
According to the plan, Subhrakant lured Pratyush under the pretense of taking him to a doctor after school on Tuesday morning.
Subsequently, the suspects contacted the boy's parents, demanding ransom and threatening to harm the child if their demands were not met.
After handing the child off to other accomplices, Subhrakant returned to the village, fabricating a story for the victim's parents, claiming that the abductors had threatened the boy with a gun.
However, police grew suspicious of Subhrakant and successfully located the victim by tracing the phone number of him and the other suspects.
